Emergency lighting that is designed, not scattered
The fittings are the easy part. Where they go, and what each one has to light, is what the standard is about.
-
Designed before it is fitted
Every escape route, stair, exit and open area worked out on a drawing, so nothing is placed where the wiring happened to be easy.
-
The right fitting for each area
Maintained or non-maintained, self-contained or central battery, chosen for how each part of the building is used.
-
Test facilities built in
Fitted so the monthly function test is a few minutes with a key, not a job that needs the power switched off.
-
Certified on completion
Duration-tested and certificated to BS 5266-1, with the log book set up for the tests that follow.
Direct answer: emergency lighting is installed to BS 5266-1 so that escape routes, exits and key safety equipment stay lit when the mains fails, usually for three hours. The fire risk assessment says where it is needed; the design says exactly what goes where.
What the design covers
- Escape routes: corridors and routes to every final exit, lit along their length.
- Points of emphasis: each exit door, every flight of stairs, changes of level and direction, and corridor junctions.
- Safety equipment: fire alarm call points and firefighting equipment, so they can be found in the dark.
- Open areas: larger rooms where people would otherwise be left in darkness before they reach a route.
- Exit signs: the signs that must stay visible on mains failure, lit or illuminated.
- Outside the final exit: enough light to move away from the building safely.
New fit-out, replacement or extension
On a fit-out we work from the layout drawings and the fire strategy, so the lighting goes in with the ceilings rather than after them. On an older building the question is often replacement: fittings whose batteries no longer hold three hours, and a layout that no longer matches the rooms. Where the existing system is sound we extend it rather than start again, and say so in the quote.
After the installation
BS 5266-1 expects a short monthly function test and a full-duration test every year, recorded in the log book. Since the 2025 edition there is also a photometric verification at least every five years, a measured check that light levels still match the design. Our guide to how often emergency lighting must be tested covers all three, and emergency lighting testing is the service that keeps the certificate current.
How an installation runs
Four steps, with the price agreed in writing before anyone starts.
-
01
Survey and the assessment
We walk the routes with your fire risk assessment, and check what is already installed and whether it holds its duration.
-
02
Design and written quote
Fitting types and positions drawn, then priced in writing, with no obligation.
-
03
Installed and commissioned
Fitted around the building’s use, then every fitting is duration-tested on battery.
-
04
Certificate and log book
Installation certificate issued, the log book set up, and someone on site shown the monthly test.
Emergency lighting installation: common questions
Self-contained fittings or a central battery?
Most small and medium buildings suit self-contained fittings, each with its own battery: simple to install and to extend, and one failure only takes out one light. A central battery system feeds every fitting from one battery room, which can make sense in a large building with a lot of fittings, at the cost of a plant space and a single system to maintain. The survey compares both on your building.
Maintained or non-maintained?
Non-maintained fittings are off until the mains fails, which suits offices, corridors and stairs. Maintained fittings are lit all the time and stay lit on mains failure, which is used where people gather in dim light, such as function rooms and some venues. The fire risk assessment and the use of each area decide which goes where.
Do exit signs count as emergency lighting?
An illuminated exit sign on the emergency circuit does, and where a sign has to be visible in a power cut it needs to be lit or lit by a nearby fitting. A printed sign on its own is signage, not emergency lighting. The design marks which signs need illuminating.
What do we get at the end?
A system commissioned and duration-tested, the installation certificate, a log book for the monthly and annual tests, and a short handover so somebody on site can do the monthly function test. We can then carry out the annual test for you.
