What each accreditation covers, and how to verify it

What we are usually called out to in Hillingdon

Hillingdon is one of London’s largest boroughs and one of its most varied for fire safety work. The Heathrow side, around Hayes, West Drayton and the Bath Road, is warehousing, freight and logistics and a long row of hotels; Uxbridge and Stockley Park are offices and a university; and the north of the borough, around Ruislip and Northwood, is houses, schools and care homes.

This is the far west of what we cover, about an hour from Southgate on the M25 or the A40. Tell us how urgent the job is when you book and we will say honestly how soon we can be there.

Buildings we work on in Hillingdon

Four building types that come up again and again across UB8, UB3, UB4, UB7, HA4, and what each one actually needs from a fire alarm system.

  1. Warehouses and freight sheds

Beam or heat detection for high roofs, with zones redrawn as the racking and mezzanines change.

  2. Hotels

Detection in every bedroom, and an alarm that works for guests asleep and a small night shift.

  3. Business park offices

Addressable systems over several floors, serviced under BS 5839-1 with a written report each visit.

  4. Care homes in the north of the borough

Zoning that matches the phased evacuation the staff actually carry out.

What this building needs

Warehouses & industrial

Roof height and stack height decide the detection. Beam, aspirating and in-rack rather than more point detectors.

What moves a fire safety price, and where the money actually goes

Warehouses that grew inside

A warehouse is designed for one layout and then changes: the racking goes higher, mezzanines and offices are added, and part of the floor is turned over to different stock. Each change can leave areas the original detection does not reach, or detectors a forklift now blocks. Beam or heat detection is often the right answer in tall spaces, and the zone plan has to be redrawn every time the layout moves.

Under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, the Responsible Person for the building (usually the employer, owner, landlord or managing agent) has to make sure a fire risk assessment is carried out and the fire precautions are kept working. Getting the design wrong is not just a technical problem, it is that duty left unmet.

A takeover audit here starts with
whether a warehouse system still covers the racking and mezzanines added since it was installed

Fire safety in Hillingdon: your questions

Hillingdon is a long way from Southgate. Do you really cover it?

Yes. It is the far west of what we cover, about an hour away, so tell us how urgent the job is when you book and we will say honestly how soon we can be there. Servicing visits are booked ahead, so for them the distance makes no difference.

Can you take over an existing system in Hillingdon?

Yes. It starts with a free survey, then a takeover report, £250 + VAT for up to 15 devices. We test what is installed, tell you in writing whether it matches the building and the standard, and quote to take over the servicing. There is no gap in your cover while you switch. In Hillingdon that report usually starts with whether a warehouse system still covers the racking and mezzanines added since it was installed.

How often does a commercial fire alarm have to be serviced?

BS 5839-1 recommends inspection and servicing by a competent person at least every six months. That does not change with the postcode. What changes is what the engineer should be looking at, which is why we survey the building rather than working from a checklist.
